Why Baltimore is Your Next Boating Destination

The Baltimore waterfront is full of natural beauty, man-made attractions, historical landmarks, and luxurious shops and restaurants. At the heart of it all is the Inner Harbor Marina, a centralized hub for the Baltimore boating community.

Our list of attractions and sights will help make your next trip to Charm City one for the books!

Top Waterfront Attractions

The Baltimore boating ecosystem has tons of great attractions, from family-friendly events to historical sights and sounds. One stand-out favorite is the National Aquarium. It has a stunning glass pyramid, over 20,000 sea creatures, and tons of activities for everyone. Make sure to reserve some time to go visit the National Aquarium during your time at Inner Harbor Marina - the museum is a short walk away!

Nearby, you’ll find the USS Constellation. It tells the story of America’s naval history, offering a glimpse into life at sea during the 19th century. The USS Constellation Museum offers public access and tours throughout the week. The hours fluctuate a bit, so check the museum’s website for current hours.

Do you have a mind for science? If so, the Maryland Science Center is the ideal destination. The center has eye-catching exhibits, a planetarium, and interactive displays that will help you pass the time and learn some interesting scientific facts.

And there are plenty of shopping and dining options that line the waterfront. You can enjoy gourmet seafood, quick local eats, and a fun shopping experience.

Events and More

You’ll encounter all sorts of great events in the area throughout the year. The summer months are the most active and feature open-air concerts, outdoor moving screenings, and festivals celebrating everything from art to food. There’s also plenty to do in the fall and spring, but things slow down in the chillier winter months.

If you like seeing premium fireworks spectacles, make sure to book a stay at the Inner Harbor Marina during the Fourth of July. You can take in the city’s fireworks display, which takes place right over the harbor.

You can also check out the Baltimore Book Festival. The festival is coming back in 2024 after a four-year hiatus and is sure to return with a bang!

All of these events take place near the Inner Harbor Marina. Some are within walking distance, and others are just a short car ride away.

Mr. Trash Wheel

While staying at the Inner Harbor Marina, you might just catch a glimpse of another Baltimore boating attraction, Mr. Trash Wheel. Officially known as the Inner Harbor’s water wheel, Mr. Trash Wheel is a floating water wheel system that collects trash from the harbor.

Since its installation in 2014, the Mr. Trash Wheel has removed hundreds of tons of debris from the water, making it a quirky yet vital part of the harbor’s ecosystem. Similar water wheels have been launched around the country. Cumulatively, these devices have collected over 2,360 tons of trash. These innovative systems collect everything from kegs to cigarette butts and plastic bags.
